Export your Instagram or Messenger messages as JSON.

Instagram and Messenger use the same Meta tool, the Accounts Center. Yapped reads the export in JSON format, not HTML.

Choose the JSON format. An HTML export is refused with a message asking you to start again in JSON. Then drop the full archive: Yapped lists the conversations it contains and you choose which one to read.

FROM THE ACCOUNTS CENTER

Download your information

Open Meta’s Accounts Center from the settings of Instagram or Facebook.
Go to Your information and permissions, then Export your information, and create an export.
Choose the profile: Instagram’s for Instagram, Facebook’s for Messenger.
Choose Export to device, then specific types of information, and tick only Messages.
Set the format to JSON, pick the date range you want, and start creating the file.
When Meta tells you it is ready, download the archive from the available downloads.
Drop the complete ZIP archive on Yapped, without unzipping it.

Instagram’s help describes Settings, Meta Account, Your information and permissions, Export your information, then Create export. Labels may differ in your app.

How long does it take?

According to Instagram’s help, the link can take up to 30 days to arrive, and the export then stays available for 4 days in the downloads. The request requires your Instagram password.

WHAT YAPPED READS

Several conversations, one choice

The archive holds message_1.json, message_2.json… files per conversation: do not separate them, drop the whole archive.
If it holds several conversations, Yapped lets you choose which to read. Unsent messages, calls and reactions are not counted.
Some end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats may not be in the standard export; this guide does not cover Messenger’s separate procedure for them.

HOW IT IS PROCESSED

How it is processed

On your device: Your file is read in your browser. Yapped counts the messages, works out everyone’s statistics and removes phone numbers, emails, addresses, IBANs and card numbers before anything is sent. Nothing leaves before you agree.
Only if you agree: When you tap your name, you agree: the text of the chat, without those details, goes to Yappy, an AI hosted in the European Union with zero retention. It keeps nothing. For ages 15 and up.
What Yapped keeps: Not your messages. If you buy a pack, your binder link (the generated pack, not your chat) lasts 30 days and you can delete it.
